If you had to open the packaging to see that the product was not suitable then you should try and repackage it as carefully as you can and return it . They have a legal obligation to provide a refund. There are exceptions however to do with health and safety,so if you can say what it is you wish to return I may be able to give you a better answer.
When I was in a local DIY shed I asked about returns as the item was in one of those bubble sealed packs that one has to break open. I was told if it were cut careful across the top so they could re-seal and resell it, that would be ok. I would have thought the same should apply to mail order items. Don't wreck the packaging and it ought to be ok.
Henry I can't answer your question because I don't know the proper, legal answer.
