Without luck (for required dates/budget)
Can anyone recommend any sites?
Apart from usual late booking .com
Or the usual suspects I'm having no luck

You might be best to try the hostels where they could share a room or even a dorm if budgets are really tight.

If I ignore the places with poor reviews (and therefore concentrate on those with fairly good reviews) I'm finding prices of between about £19 and £27 per person per night in twin-bedded rooms in hotels and B&Bs, or between about £11 and £15 per person per night in hostel dormitories, on my favourite budget accommodation website:

(Don't be put off by the word 'hostel' in that URL; they're are lots of hotels and B&Bs on that site as well. If they're not interested in hostels, they simply need to conduct an initial search and then use the filters down the left of the results page to select only hotels and B&Bs).
