Classical music never seems to be a very popular subject here on AB, but I thought I would post this. Vickers was a towering force in Opera after the war. My grandmother saw him in Britten's Peter Grimes.

I had a brief chat with him when we were both in the audience at the Covent Garden Ring Cycle in the late 80's. Lovely man !

No popular, you mean rarely discussed ? I'm sure many like it. As for me I rarely know the folk involved, the artistes. I just know what I like when I hear it.
Flash never works in work, I may check you link when I get home. I quite like opera but prefer to understand the language when sung :-) Sorry to hear a favourite of yours has now gone.

OG...indeed I did mean discuss, rather than popular amongst us. To anybody who likes serious music, and opera in particular, the passing of Vickers is a sad event.

Here is Peter Grimes OG, firmly in English !

Oh dear, another great voice silenced. There is a very good documentary running on Sunday nights, BBC4 with Antonio Pappano " the opera classical voices". It's sad to realise so many have gone, last week the tenor was examined and Jon Vickers appeared along with Corelli,Caruso,Pavarotti, Pears and others, All now dead. Last night it was the turn of the mezzo soprano and again, most of the great voices gone, Shirley Verrett, Kathleen ferrier ( we discovered no film ever existed of her singing) and Marian Anderson. Dame Janet is still with us thankfully, as is Cecilia Bartoli.
Next week, the last in the series, covers the great Bass voices. I think the other three are on iplayer.
Jon Vickers was a great Heldentenor, he'll be missed.

Thanks Vulcan ! I missed last nights program, but thanks to you, I will have a look on the iplayer.
Aye I caught that one. Noticed I can still watch the soprano one on 4OD.
Sorry I meant a different Pappano from Friday evening.
