Glanced at the preamble, instantly saw what the theme was going to be (lucky guess perhaps?), and thought I'd have a go at the grid fill. Didn't get all the extra letters but fairly sure I can see the final step. A fairly gentle, but entertaining, effort from Wiglaf.

Figured I would start the N&C although whether I'll be able to join in much from now I don't know. Off to France for a couple of weeks, starting tomorrow, which is something worth N&Cing about I guess. Hope everyone else in the old EV crowd is well?

Unlike you, Jim, it took me a while to get the theme. I was a bit worried when I saw the grid as there seemed to be a lot of short entries, but it turned out to be pretty enjoyable - although I don't think I've previously come across the precise form of the sentence used by Wiglaf. I'm also curiously surprised by the lack of press coverage regarding the theme - although I guess that might grow over the next week.

Have a good time in France. We had one family holiday there a few years ago; all went well until our daughter found that they eat horses, at which pint she refused to eat for the last week of our holiday!!
Hello jim360 and EV_Solver,
The clues led me to populate the central section of the grid quite quickly, so the sentence just needed to be deduced with the help of AS SHEER ENJOYMENT.
Jim, have a good break in France. Just back from Mauritius, so have been exercising my school boy french. Didn't go hungry or thirsty or get lost, so some of my brain cells are still working!

It's mainly not a holiday but a work-related visit, so I'll probably spend most of it busy rather than relaxing, although I am expecting to be able to enjoy the 14th July celebrations if I wish, and hope to make the most of the following weekend. And then back in Edinburgh on 24th.

I am finding the clues with 3-letter answers difficult.
I have the perimeter and the object to be reinstated.

But I only have 16 of the 23 extra letters. They do not make much sense now.

The 3-letter answers I am still working on are 2D, 17A and 33A.
I am assuming my other entries are correct.

2dn "Food I served after five" gives V + (three-letter word meaning "I").

17ac "My casual Thursday? Come again?", wordplay gives (thursday) + (two-letter word meaning "I didn't hear that")

33ac "Expected winner going around park" gives (four-letter word meaning "expected winner") reversed.

Hope that helps. Hence all three of these give extra letters.
Thanks jim360.
I am across the pond hence delay in answering.
Enjoy your trip to France.
Hello All, good to hear from you, guessed it might be what it turned out to be altho' I hadn't heard that particular sentence either EV. Thanks for the hints on Thursday Jim, I was having trouble with that one too. Good to hear from you DocHH, are you going to the reunion? Is it your year?
Still plodding with last week's EV ....... can't see it at all.
Hello devadolly,
Only just back from Mauritius last monday, so cannot help on last week's EV. My last EV was 1180 and managed that on a Dreamliner and even used pen rather than pencil to populate the grid! How arrogant is that? I was not familiar with this week's actual sentence, just some other forms of it. Will not be going to any reunion, don't do "going back"!
Hello Doc, nor do I....go back....too far anyway. Yes very arrogant! However, I was away that week watching very fast cars so didn't see 1180 but have heard that it was gentle. What are the Dreamliners like? Like the 380's as long as one doesn't land just behind one!!
The Dreamliner is very comfortable, especially as herself insists we turn left whenever we fly long-haul. Have done 1 trip short-haul on it, and even in standard class it was comfortable.
