However, my understanding of hypnotic techniques are that if the person is well motivated to change their behaviour, then the hypnosis is helpful.
If they are not motivated, no amount of hypnosis will help.
So...if you really really want to stop biting your nails, it will help.
If you want something to stop you from biting your nails without you doing much, it won't work.

A friend of mine was a nail biter all her life, bit them down to the quick.
She had false nails put on for a wedding and liked them so much she continued with them for a year or more.
When she eventually decided she didn't want to keep having them done, it had broken the nail biting habit and she's never bitten them since.

Thankyou for all your replies.
Having bit my nails for 30+years, i am very motivated and having tried other treatments, i am willing to try anything so confident this may work.
I agree the cost isnt cheap, I have been quoted £45 for 90 minute session and its been suggested 3-4 sessions should help.
I have tried false nails in the past and that does help, but these did get expensive and found that when the false nails came off my natural nails wrre much more brittle so have not used them for a while.
I have grown my nails on 2-3 occasions in the past, and when my nails look nice, i have no desire to bite them, its the in between stage that i am not very good with!
I have also bought a hypnosis cd from Amazon which came with good reviews so may also try that as a cheaper option.

Try the self-help tape first before you shell out for a hypnotist.
As I said before, the important factor in this is your motivation.
If you are motivated, and you sound as though you are, then hypnosis should help.....and tapes etc are probably almost as good as the 'real thing.'
All the best.

Just a quick update I had hypnosis back at the end of May, and after first session I stopped! The day after there were about 3 occasions I went to bite, but stopped myself as I was much more aware of what I was about to do.
I had my second session a fortnight after and pleased to say that 9 weeks have passed and have not once bitten my nails! So for anyone thinking of having hypnotherapy, please try it. Best £90 I've ever spent!
