Lack Of Internet
can any of you tell me why for the last couple of months when i come downstairs in the morning my router is showing all the lights including the red one? i know i have to switch it off at the mains and start again. This morning was the worst yet (30 mins +) until the lights settled down its almost as if you haven't used me for a few hours, i'm shutting down completely. The only change i've made is switching from AOL to talk talk which are the same company anyway.

In terms of wireless router security, a Netgear device can be configured to only accept connections from an "access list" of the MAC addresses of each phone, computer, TV and even domestic appliances, these days.
It is a bit of a 'techie' solution and finding the MAC address of each device would be a task in itself, especially if the device label is hidden because it has been installed in a wall, or a fitted kitchen but it does protect against "drive by" surfing.

Hopefully, you are Not switching your Router off at night-time. You should leave it on all the time; otherwise you will send signals to the Telephone Exchange that you are unable to cope with the download which is being given to you.
When you switched to Talk Talk, did the Internet Service Provider give you a New Router. If Not, you should contact and discuss the issue with the ISP.

Hans, I have the same problem as paul. Using an HP Pavilion, Windows 8.1. and using Firefox. Had to be transferred from AOL to TalkTalk, because TT took over AOL, everything fine for a while, then about 2 weeks ago old AOL (Net Gear) router stopped working. TT sent a new router (hauewi) installed it. All 4 green lights lit up after a while. Everything working fine, ostensibly. Now after turning off laptop, but not router, after a while the "internet" light on the router goes red. The other three are green, switch computer back on, or awaken it from "sleep" "internet" light goes green, but flickers back and forward to red for ages before settling back to green. Additionally can make telephone calls out, but not receive calls. Dialling tone is intermittent rather than constant. Thoughts?
@DocHH.... Perhaps a fault on your telephone line.

If you report the matter to BT, it is quite likely that you will be told that it is an issue for you to resolve with Talk Talk and then a call to Talk Talk might result in your being told that it is a matter for BT. A difficulty of Not being fully with BT.
Try the Initial test and report back here. Hopefully, I will be able to further respond because at the moment my telephone connection is playing-up.

Hi Doc.....The link which I gave is to a BT Help page. Consequently, I am wondering if somehow your telephone number is barred from activating the line test facility, because you are operating through Talktalk.
You could try a dial out and see if you can get an automatic activated ring back, by telephoning the number 17070 . It's the number Telephone Engineers use to quickly test a line for two way functionality. Dial the number, listen to the options, then press one and immediately replace the receiver..... Your phone should then ring without anyone being on the other end.... The remaining three numbered options are also interesting.
I can't think of anything else you can do, apart from contacting Talktalk.

I came to the same conclusion about BT barring my TalkTalk line from their check service. BT do not even list my number in the BT phone book! Therefore I have gone through the Open Reach site, which directed me to the Talk Talk site, where I could do a "line test" and report the problem to Talk Talk. Since then I have had text messages from TT saying they are doing some tests. Since then I have had 2 land line calls from them, albeit showing my landline telephone number as who was calling me. I suspect they are doing the 17070 thing you suggested.
I think it will be a difficult fault to find as it is rather intermittent. The other day I was away from home standing by someone who called my home landline, the reply was that I was on the phone! So either I had an intruder or there was a fault.
