am i right in thinking that female hyenas are so pumped up with testosterone that they develop male genitalia?

Well sort of. They don't actually develop male genitalia but their sex organs look very similar. The female has a huge clitoris she can erect at will and even has a sack of fibrous tissue that looks like testicles. Here is a good site with info about Hyenas
