No native British bird - it was written by some Americans for whom the "Bluebird" is native , but not a British bird.
could have been blue tits?
I heard something about this on the radio. Was it an American song, or something. Can't remember now.
Yep, has LCDMAN says unlikely to ever see a Bluebird over the White cliffs of Dover.

No, bluebirds are a different species to blue tits. It was an American song for the English market.
When the song was written , by an American I think, the author did not realise that there were no blue birds in England. The are an American species.
It was decided to publish the song anyway rather than try to change it.
Vera Lynn's version of that song is, of course, the most memorable involving, as it did, an emotional tie between the British public and WWII. However, if you Google it you will find that many bands and singers performed it prior to her making it "famous".
I believe it refers to the Bluebird of happiness.....

Featured in Terry Pratchett's Hogfather.
I agree with Mazie. This was a war time song and it indicates that things will get better. And people will live in harmony once more.
Donald Campbell's blue bird?
Mrs 9401 was just remarking on the dramatic rise in the numbers of blue tits about the place. She blames it on the poor summer we're having. :-P
