or does anybody else get spattered with tomato sauce trying to open the square tins of mackerel etc, if you manage to actually pull the ring back the lid doesn't quite come off and when ya shake the fish out it splatters, both ways you get it !

Not really. Usually manage it.
Don't shake it out, fork it out. Unless, of course, you are 'into' being splashed with fishy tom sauce:-)
I peel the lid back not totally removing it on purpose, poor contents with the aid of a fork.
There's quite an art form in doing the final removal: instead of "snapping" it off, just "wiggle it from side to side until it is finally freed.

Sincerely,
No Smattered:)
The answer is to ease the contents out with a fork. Ive never got splattered but ive never tried to shake them out.
ah ... I think you need an instructional video

take a plate a round one will do but a square one will match the shape of the tin

toast bread ( recent thread on this - mouldy bread would do )

take a fork - clean ( memo dont therefore take the fork that the dog seems to carry around out of its mouth )

skewer fish and put on bread/toast - hold tin down with left hand and fork out with right - dont worry the bread and plate shouldnt move by itself but it is useful to have a vice ready if it does

carry to chair turn on tee vee

and enjoy

( put fork back in dogs mouth ... no no I didnt mean that )
...just got in + logged on here....title of post attracted me, am now chucklin' head off at P P's dog's fork.....:-)

Question Author
of course i should have said thank you peter pedantic :-)
Something that irritates me are those horrid little sachets of brown sauce that cafe's now use, rather than a proper bottle. They are always difficult to open without it spurting everywhere, and then you have the problem of knowing what to do with the sticky, half-empty ruddy sachets !

It can't be cheaper to use these horrible things, rather than ut proper bottles on the table !

yes mikey Morrisons near me now have tiny sachets of milk too, very hard to open, lots have complained the cafe manager but she says it's for hygiene reasons, you need 4 of these for 1 cup of tea, funny how Saisburys have a themos jug of milk you use to pour into your cup
If you lick the tin clean, wi' tongue, the tomato sauce lasts and lasts and lasts.
