I bought a 44R jacket on-line from Debenhams. It seems to have been designed for someone a bit thinner than I am so what size do I need for a comfortable fit?

I'd look like a paunchy dart player :-(
You'll be able to carry it off, sandy. Just walk about with a pint in your hand ;-)
sandy get yer self a fancy waistcoat to wear under your new jacket, you would look like a snooker player then.

Sandy - thinking about is the jackets are sized in chest size ie 44" the then come in S R and L (short, medium and long) which relates to to length of the sleeves and jacket. So my OH is 6' and would wear R whereas my son is 6'5" would have to have long. So perhaps you need to go for 46".
a poncho would solve the problem
Then you could be Pancho Villa, in a poncho.
Great idea, ivor. He could go for the Clint look.
