Maggots!

The last two times I've gone to change the kitchen caddy and the mini one on the work top they've had gross maggots in. I keep the lids closed but somehow this time of year I can't seem to prevent it. Any advice?!

Just forget those stupid food caddies that local authorities want us to use for recycling food waste. They are just gross. We're avid recyclers for most things but absolutely draw the line at food (of which we have nothing but bones to recycle)

Do you have a brown bin to empty the caddy in to?

We experienced this problem so we now keep the little bin near the back door, then as necessary, transfer contents into large brown bin. I think most folks will have this problem, particularly in hot/warm weather, and dealing with it is determined by the resources available - garden or garage space etc.

My council doesn't use this system but in the hot weather I line an old tub with clingfilm and freeze the very little food waste I have. Perfectly hygienic, the tub is tightly sealed. I add to it as necessary and empty the frozen lump in to my bin on collection day. This is mainly bones, solid fat, meat scraps that can't go in to the compost bin.

I've been doing this for years and it works for me. Maybe you could try it and skip the mini caddy, emptying in to the brown bin when it's due to be emptied

I had this problem a couple of years (didn't help with my phobia of worms and wormlike creatures!!). I started using Bin Buddy spray cleaner to clean the bin after I emptied the bag into the outside food bin and it seems to have deterred the flies.
