Have just had a phone call from a foreign gentleman saying he was from the telephone preference service and asking whether I was still receiving nuisance phone calls. When I said yes, he promised to put it right immediately, but - surprise surprise - wanted to check my 'account details' first.
Last week I responded to one of the wretched calls telling them they should not be calling me as I've registered with the TPS. Am I right in thinking there is a sinister link here?

Yes, because TPS will not phone you.
I had a call once saying that we had nuscience calls.

Told them that we were with TPS and not to phone again - for them to reply along the lines of the TPS can't stop everything - to which I told them "and you will charge me to stop calls" then I hung up on them!
Yeah, I got one of those calls.
Just hung up on him.
if possible, ring 1471 and copy the number into here

If you work on the principle that ANYONE who phones you up out the blue might be a crook / scammer then you will be ok.

Don't trust ANYONE who phones you up that you don't know.
