Are Our Kids Tough Enough Bbc2 Last Night
10 Answers
I felt sorry for the teachers in a way, as in China its very strict in schools, but the British kids at that school were just taking the ***.
Mind you, their style of teaching seemed a bit boring, and their voices would get on my nerve.
So are we at fault in the UK, not being strict enough or do you think the Chinese way is better.
I saw a documentary a few weeks ago about kids in China, wear glasses more than anywhere in the world, because of the long hours at school & lots of homework.

I just hope the BBC didn't edit scenes for the thrill factor.
I think somewhere in the middle is best...instill a work ethic and a desire to work hard to the best of their ability.

I wouldn't learn much from their method of teaching! Their voices got on my nerves so much, I had to turn the sound off at times. The kids were taking the ***, but the teachers couldn't control them anyway. I do not think schools are as disciplined these days as when I went to school, however I could be wrong.
Tizzi...Like I said my sons school is much stricter now than when I was there. If a child misbehaves the school will hound the parents.
When I was there a naughty child would be sent out of class and made to stand next to the door and DO NOT move. Now they are sent out, a phone call home, a letter home, an email and a text. If bad behaviour continues the parents will be called in for a meeting.
This puts the emphasis back on the parents...although school are more than willing to help if something is happening at home that affects a child's behaviour.

I was very ashamed to be honest and hoped the kids and their parents would be when it was played back to them. What stuns me is when a head of department goes in to observe, and they all know it's being filmed, they still didn't behave. I expect they did edit out the well behaved bits.
I'm an ex-secondary school teacher and I must admit when I see teachers like the Chineses almost in tears because of class behaviour it breaks my heart. Unless you've experienced it you cannot know how demoralising it is.

We had a very fierce head-nun - one day I was smiling at the back of the class - she just pointed the ruler at me and said "why are you smiling like a chinese cat" I started to shake - you weren't allowed to smile. God she was fearsome. If you were late - big leather straps on you wee tiny hands.
Do believe half of these hard nuns never wanted to be nuns - it was their parents co-ercing them.
