Frequent Funeral Guest?

A friend in her 80s seems to attend 1 or more funerals a week!. There are 2 coming up this week.

Almost all are only people from the church she attends even tho she has only spoken to in passing.

Invariably she will join the family mourners for the cuppa and a bite to eat after.

I wonder what draws her to such personal and in my opinion very private occasions.

It's not because she is lonely.. I just find it odd.it's bad enough attending necessary funeral's.

Some people make it their life's work. They peruse the obituary columns and when they see the phrase, 'All welcome back afterwards at...' they're on a roll. Saves on food bills.

You could be right jackdaw. I have often heard the words I don't want any dinner I'm still full up ha ha.

nothing wrong with attending the funerals of fellow worshippers; it's one of life's rituals, and probably in this case a religious one. And though a young person might find attending them a trial, those who expect to have one of their own soon will probably think differently.

Think of the late Blanche from Corrie. She and her mates spent their lives going to strangers' funerals for a good scran.

My mother in law is a serial funeral attendee.

We're Irish, funerals are not private occasions, they are usually announced in the local paper here and back home.

It's not so much about the dead...it's about the living and showing your support for them.

My father was a serial attendee at local funerals.There was nothing he enjoyed better than a good funeral.I can see him now in his best suit , white shirt and smart tie , trilby hat and walking cane.He would return to regale us all with the details.In fairness to him he was a very sociable man with lots of sporting hobbies and he did have many friends.
I think my Mother found his funeral outings a bit depressing, and would escape to her bench in the garden with a strong cup of tea with her coat on if it was raining!

Brenda...it borders on amusing doesn't it? When MIL tells us about the funerals she's attended we get the giggles....even she sees the funny side now.

It's all about a good send off. A comfort to the family. All good intentions.

The Irish don't let people just RIP...they say masses for them week after week and we receive mass cards, signed by the priest, from someone they went to school with 50 years ago!

But like I said...good intentions.

I had an old aunt like that. Nothing she enjoyed more than a good funeral - and the more floral tributes representing 'The Gates Ajar' and suchlike, the better. Always described them as ‘lovely’.

my ex ma in law was a serial funeral attendee, and then she would describe the floral contibutions..........it was loverly send off the flowers "the GATES OF HEAVEN" "THE PILLOW OF REST" & "The VACANT CHAIR" it wasnt a good send off unless all three were there.
When my ex father in law died she had The Vacant Chair done in West Ham colours and "very vacant" written across it, which sent me into fits of stiffled giggles.

There's a guy in our town goes to all funerals, I don't like him, he came to our son's, like ummmm said it's open door for the Irish, yet I put the run on this guy, dressed like Elvis and made out he knew our loved one, even told us how he died (listening and picking up from what he heard outside, didn't even know we were family) I put the run on him, as for cards, we received a beautiful card, lovely sentiment and just laughed as at very end of it, Have a Wonderful Birthday, the lady that sent it was horrified, for us; it was a memorable and funny thing, one our son would have loved.
