My children want to do one of these adopt a child in a third world country that you see adverts for. A quick google has revealed loads of organisations that seem to do this. My concern with third world charity has always been about will our money actually go where we want it to go. Does anyone have any recommendations/advice?

slimjim - If you could wait until tonight hopefully I will then be able to help you. We sponsored a child for about a year until my husband was made redundant, and I thought it was through Tear Fund, but he says not but will look through his files tonight. You're quite right in being cautious as so much can be swallowed up in admin which defeats the whole object, doesn't it?

Tks Cetti, let me know.
Right - It was called the Christian Children's Fund of Great Britain (CCFGB), but now it's merged the name is 'Every Child'.

The address is: 4 Bath Place, Rivington Street, London EC2A 3DR

This site gives you an e-mail address as well. You can choose which country, whether boy or girl. It's highly recommended as there is no pressure you can stop when you wish, and the child sends delightful letters. Good Luck!

why does it have to be third world child ? why not an english one ?
me and mrsbobley sponsor a child in uganda (through Plan International) and we had the most excellent experience of meeting him on our trip round the world last year. We met all the staff at the field office too and were shown around their offices and all the schools etc that they had built with the money received. A very worthwhile experience and I can recommend them 100% as being a very hands-on charity where almost all of the money is channelled into local projects. "Our" boy sends letters and pictures to us and we to him, but all the money goes to the community as a whole rather than just to him and his family.
My family sponsor a little girl in Ecuador via Plan International. We pay 15 a month and we get regular updates, newsletters, fact sheets and letetrs from Veronica who we sponsor. In reality our money goes to improve life etc in the whole village (school books, buildings, sanitation, water purification etc etc) but Veronica is our personal link. Via Plan you can opt to sponsor a girl or boy from a range of countries across the world. The Uk link is http://www.plan-uk.org/
