Just been listening to an old album. My goodness, takes
me back, 40 years ? Having and smoke and pretendimg we understood ! Ahhhhh to be young again
Even the Man himself says he doesn't know what his lyrics mean. I never have pretended to understand or second guess, I just enjoy the images.
What was there to understand?
If I were still young I would not have my wonderful grandchildren
Have quite a few Leonard Cohen CDs and just let the music and lyrics kind of wash over me. He has, for me, quite a hypnotic voice which I love.
Fabulous lyricist.

"I ache in the places where I used to play" & "I was born with the gift of a golden voice" always make me smile.

In his early years it used to be 'where's the gin and a dark room' listening but when he reinvented/came back the lyrics are amazing. My favourite, summing up where we are in our lives, is

'Summer's almost gone
Winter's tuning up'
His lyrics are great because even when they don't make obvious sense, they can still mean something to you! & morbid? naah try Closing Time Brilliant !!!!
Genius.....

I think Leonard likes people to make their own pictures from his words - and that includes him.

Some are clearly autobiographical - Suzanne is the most obvious, and So Long Marianne - but the rest are just fabulous images, like The Tower Of Song.

Anyone who thinks he is morbid is not listening properly - he is melancholy, which is a very different thing.
