Sophia Lauren's 'Lost in Translation' really captured the night-light there in Tokyo, the feel of something simmering underneath the superficial 'order', retro, hopefully you will get out into the countryside, that is beautiful from the little that I have seen..... Bloody expensive by the way!

Regarding Japan being expensive, if you stick to the local restaurants, and don't go and eat Kobe beef, you will not find it expensive. Don't eat Sushi at night, eat it for lunch, the price goes up a lot at night. Buy your train tickets etc. before you go on-line, if you are planning a lot of traveling, you can get really good deals including the Shinkansen. My son and g/f went in April for two weeks and came back with money. They stayed in some great Ryokan for 50-60 euros a night. As always, just watch the tourist traps and do plenty of research beforehand.
