what r the pros and cons of buying back your car if written off for cosmetic damage as expence of repairs greater than value of car

My favourite motor was deemed uneconomic to repair and so written off.
I was 500 miles away from home. If I'd been able to get it home I could have had it fixed for very little cost and would be using it yet.
I know for a fact that it was bought and put back on the road. Someone got a really good car cheap.
