Night Owls Versus The Larks
39 Answers
I didn't want to further derail an already tetchy thread over in H&G - but I do want to explore a pet irritation of mine.
Why is it acceptable for the early risers amongst us to start clattering around in the morning - "it's the best part of the day - you should be up enjoying it" - when if we night owls make so much as a peep in the evening we are roundly castigated as being antisocial - "people are trying to sleep you know".
The larks are so dratted self-righteous about their 'early to rise' habit - as if it makes them morally superior in some way.
I function better (and my world is, by and large, more entertaining) between 11pm and 1am than I do between 6am and 8am - yet I am treated as some sort of morally degenerate sloth when I want some sleep in the morning.
I actually sleep less than the larks - but they don't believe that and regard it as some sort of bizarre challenge to deprive me of my morning kip.

My parents always used to moan to me growing up that couples out late at night were – up to no good. Not sure about that – I lost my virginity at around two o’clock in the afternoon!
Speaking of utterly undeserved moral superiority – where is the high ground in not having a television?

Another night owl here. While I appreciate the glories of early summer mornings, early rising is and always has been a struggle for me. I much prefer evenings and late...sometimes very late...nights. Of I could get away with doing my hoovering at 2am,I'd be a happy bunny.
Apparently,in early modern times.people would retire when the sun set, sleep for about 4-5 hours, then rise in the middle of the night for an hour or two. They would have a snack,chat...whatever.Then back to bed until sunrise.

I used to work on nightshift security, which really turned me nocturnal... and like it so much with it being so quiet naturally grew into it. Mornings are difficult to get up because find it difficult to sleep against body clock.
Ah, needs must as the devil drives, recently looking after Bro's for three weeks re-set my body-clock-ish ;-)
Animals are easily forgiven though.

I tend to get up at around 6 a.m. (don't actually own an alarm clock, just tend to wake up naturally, or if one of the cats decides they need me to be up to feed them and pats a paw on my cheek). I too like the still of the morning, so certainly am neither a 'clatterer' or someone who puts music on in the morning. Start work at 8.30, am not worth talking to until at least 10 a.m....
I'm a firm sleeper-in until I awake naturally - usually about 8.00 a.m.. Bed at c.11.00, but can happily stay up later than that, so I suppose I am a bit of an owl.
Snag - Mr. J. has puritanical ethos about not giving way to sloth. We came to an acceptable compromise of 7.30 and he can leap out of bed, let the dog out, clean his paws etc. etc. then come upstairs and shower whilst I wake up slowly and groggily (no, it doesn't depend on how much I drank the night before!).
Development from snag - since we came to live in the North (remember it is dark, bleak and satanic mills you lot) he is leaping awake about 6.a.m., shaking me awake and yelling that we are late (for whatever, I'm not sure). This is before he puts his specs on and I hit him and he discovers the time.
It's because it's lighter here, earlier. I really hope he acclimatises before I do something dreadful. I shall plead sleep-strangulating in my defence!
