This morning my BT hub 5 was flashing orange so I went through BT`s online diagnostic process. One of the things I had to do was disconnect all phone apparatus. So I did and now I have no phone line. Personally, I think the problem is with the socket (it`s a double socket with phone in one and broadband in the other).
Yes, it is possible. I was without my telephone service for 5 days last week but my broadband worked okay.
I am not with British Telecom, but I've copied and pasted the following from their help/advice page for you:
///My phone's working but my internet connection isn't (or the reverse). Could this be due to a fault?
Yes. Calls and the internet make different demands on a phone line. A fault may stop one from working without affecting the other. If you're having problems with your broadband connection, however, you should visit our Broadband section for support.///

yes it is. I had no incoming or outgoing phone but broadband worked fine. It was die to internal damage to the BT infinity socket caused by stormy weather. I had trouble getting the call centre person at BT to understand and accept what i was saying because the line test they can do (and the one you can do from the website) shows no fault and I was on the website chatline to him reporting the fault but the tech who came out said its quite common.
Thanks for the replies. At least I`m a bit wiser about the problem. I think the problem is with BT. The last call I made was to their automatic line checker and now my phone says "Check Phone Line". When I pick it up, it sounds like the line is open - there is just a hissing sound. I think that unplugging the line from the socket disturbed something and the socket is knackered. Their fault tracker says that the problem is in or close to my property. At least I have broadband.
If you check out bt service status at the moment you will see that many parts of the country are experiencing problems with bt one way or another. There is an 'open fault' on my line at the moment and it has been open for a few days now. with reference to another query on answer bank re internet access with bt I have managed to stay on line despite this open fault which it would seem affects quite a large part of the country....good old bt.....if it wasn't for the help I have received via this wonderful community I would not be online at the mo cos I am not tech-savvy at all. I am really glad I joined AB! Not so sure I feel the same way about bt.....considering jumping ship!
