Dead tadpoles
3 Answers
Another tadpole question. Over the past few days I've founds lots of dead tadpoles floating on the surface of my pond. Any idea what could have caused this. They are all smaller than average & I wonder if it's lack of food, although I'm supplementing the pond's natural resources with boiled lettuce which they're all eating.

I'm guessing that this is a small pond and there are probably too many tadpoles for the water volume.
It's probably best to reduce the numbers as if there are too many in the pond then most won't develop into froglets.
Increasing feeding won't help if there are too many in the pond - it'll just add to polluting the water.

Hi Wendy - my husband just said it could be due to lack of oxygen & the temperature being too hot.
We keep our taddies in the shade & in a seperate large container, otherwise the fish will eat them, 'specially our massive ghost coy! They are happily swimming about, eating fish food (when it's softened) & lettuce. Their tails are now changing - amazing to watch the transformation.
Thanks File Cutter & Smudge. Yes, my pond is very small which I realise is a problem and is in shade for part of the day & full of ozygenating plants. As it's at the bottom of the garden, there's no electric pump to keep the water moving. Any suggestions as to how else I can provide more oxygen? Smudge - your tadpoles are obviously more advanced than mine if their tails are already developing.
