Somerfields customers can apply for Saver cards which they swipe every time they go shopping. These cards entitle them to any special deals going on and according to what they buy, sometimes get money off vouchers.

I was in the store today and noticed the cashier on the till I was waiting at was, if the customer did not offer her their card, swiping one through before collecting the payment. I've never seen this happen beofre and only assume it is her own personal card and she is collecting up the credits from other people's shopping. She was about to do it to mine, without asking, when I stopped her by giving her my Saver card.

Should I write to complain. Is she actually doing anything wrong?

Whenever I've been in Somerfield, the cashiers have always asked me for my card before asking for payment, so that the fantastic (???) savings can be deducted from my total before I pay. I would suspect the cashier you dealt with is not allowed to do whas she has done. Does anyone on AB work at Somerfield? They'd be the best person to answer you.

My b/f works for a large Supermarket, and one of the cashiers was caught "collecting" points for herself, she was seen on CCTV,and on the till computer programme. She was instantly dismissed.

However, this Somerfields Till programme may not let the cashier run through the goods without a Savercard, and so they may use a "blank" one(but I don't think so) If I were you I would phone the store manager and report it.Having said which she won't get away with it for long, because the computer will report when too many sales are credited to a Savercard, in too short a period.

PS CiderMonkey,

Yes,she is doing something wrong,it's called fraud!

No, I think what she was doing was okay. Before I had a savercard, I often bought offers that were for savercard customers only, and the cashier would take a blank card (one in an envelope on a stack of others by the till) and swipe it so I would not miss out. When I finally got around to getting my own savercard, the first few times I used it I got a lot of money off coupons at the till, even  though I hadn't spent much money in there - this could be because my card was one of the blank ones they swipe.

Although, if the cashier was swiping the savercard before even asking people if they had their own, I think you should definitely let the store know, although I would not accuse her of 'stealing' points, incase she was just doing it to be nice to people without savercards, and letting them benefit from the offers.

Ive had a saver card since they came out and ive never heard of this "points thing" i was told it was for special offers" eg " only 2.99 with a saver card ive never had any points -like you do at tesco etc
Somerfields don't have a points system. The saver card is purely for you to take advantage of the special offers.
ie.BOgOFFs etc.I think sometimes ,especially when they are busy they use a card they keep by the till. This saves them having to ask the customer for their card and if they are all like me ,I am still rooting round in my bag for it!!
But there is no harm in clarifyng the matter with the store manager.
I agree that the cashier was most probably swiping the card to let the customer get the store-card-only deals, but if SF don't use a point system then how are the vouchers (like buy 15 of veg and get 1 off) allocated?

Many thanks for your answers.
why not just forget about it and admire the girls initative for using her own card to get other peoples points. Lets face it the poor love is probably not far off the minimum wage and the only benefits she gets is cheap cakes at the end of the night.  So what shes using her card, personally wouldnt lose any sleep about it
It's a regular occurance at my somerfield, in fact most customers who've got a saver card offer in their baskets, but no card with them ask the cashier to swipe the card(kept near most tills). Other than the money coming off the bill, the only other benefit to a saver card is any vouchers on the receipt, which you get. They're doing us a favour really.
Yep, happens in my Somerfield too. I think it's just a blank one to let the shopping go through and the customer to get the deals or whatever. I've seen supervisors on the till using it, so I assume it's okay for them to do so.
The cashier is actually helping you out. You have to have a Saver Card to get the deals but each till has an override one incase a customer has forgotten theirs and gets funny. She was probably using this to get you the deals/money off. You don't collect points on them so she wouldn't have made anything off you.
Sorry - I work for them and thought I should clear that up!!!
I work for Somerfield as a cashier - the card that you saw being swiped is called an SaverOveride card, we use them when people are being too slow to get their own out or they don't have one, so they don't miss out on deals. Somerfield does not have a "points scheme", you simply save there and then with the card. The girl on the checkout was doing her job, all SF checkout operators have one. Next time look and you will see that it is white, not green. The whole point of the Savercard is not to save you money but for the company to see what you buy! We're watching all of you! All of this is academic now, as the rumour is, is that the savercard is soon to be discontinued - some of you may have noticed it no longer makes any differnce to your bill and you now get no vouchers either. Have a peek at the SF website and it'll tell you all about the Savercard, but trust me it's not a thrilling read...
