You ajust them to the length of your stride and they calaulate the distance from the number of jolts they get (ie steps you take)
Not necessarily for walking though....read on.! I saw a movie about 10years ago with a storyline of a thrifty/miserly family. They wife was absolutely obsessed with not spending money and saving money... anyway the wife had one of these "pedometeres" strapped to her thigh with a garter when the hubbie was thrusting away. He had to pay her a certain amount per "Jolt" as shown on the pedometer. BTW it was a comedy.
As classy has already mentioned, before you start you imput your stride length for a particular activity (walking or running) as these vary. I think they work on a mercury switch which, when the "jolt" (as bluedolphin has christened it) occurs, the mercury completes a circuit which will then add to the step count.
