We should be used to this by now -

the polarisation that occurs when any debate hobbyhorse canters into the AB for a quick trot around and out again.

The poles are very simple and direct - on one hand you will have people who are deeply offended and think this is not a subject for levity, on the other you will have people who think it is most humorous, and people who take it seriously need to get a sense of humour and / or a life.

As far as this incident goes - the counsellor should have had more sense than to offer his sense of humour in a potentially sensitive manner, that shows lack of judgement.

As to whether the picture and caption are funny or not - that is a matter for individual opinion - and neither polarised view is likely to influence the other.

Not the professional image a councillor should be going for though. You are allowed to be human with a sense of humour after you are no longer straitjacketed by needing a serious image 110% of the time

Yes exactly og: it's funny of course, but it seems unbelievable that a councillor (its always a Tory isn't it, dear me!) would post it on facebook.
I suppose it doesn't really work unless you post it somewhere.
But on the other hand given the number of drowning incidents that have happened with these boats then its easy to see why it is also offensive.
