I was trying to avoid that, jackdaw. Whilst it's absolutely true, it's usually met with howls of derision from the apologists who would prefer to see Europe and the UK in particular transformed into a third world cess pit. So I was trying another tack.
There's 101 reasons why these people should find themselves somewhere outside Europe to resettle. However, it isn't them their welfare that concerns me. The current scenes across Europe are a disgrace. The people of Greece, Hungary, Italy and France do not deserve to have their countries turned upside down by an invasion such as this.
If the EU is to construct a concerted approach to this problem it must focus on keeping people out. All I hear is how it is proposed to accommodate people when they get here. That is not the answer. If the EU will not adopt this strategy then individual nations will have to take their own steps to protect their external borders. Hungary, to its credit, has begun to impose UN and EU rules by restricting migrants from travelling westwards. This could be the beginning of the suspension of the Schengen Agreement which will greatly assist in preventing migrants from roaming all over the continent in search of their Shangri-La.
It's a great pity that there are so many unsettled people from Africa and Asia seeking a life elsewhere. But Europe should make it clear that this is not the place for them.
