Shepherds Pie used to be made with shepherds, but you can't get them these days. Similarly, people used to put cottages in Cottage Pie, but they've become far too expensive. That and the hygiene problems associated with serving it in public toilets.

Shepherd's Pie is made with lamb because that is the meat available to a shepherd living and working ouside the town.

Cottage Pie, has beef which is available to the townspeaple who live in cottages, in villages and towns.

That's how the names originated.

As a young un in the early 60's I used to help out on a farm, around 6pm all the workers were told to get up to the cottage and get a bit of pie :-) .... Oh happy days :-) ................... whoops, nearly forgot! They reckoned it got it's name (cottage pie) because the cows were always kept near to the cottage ready for milking.
