It is possible to leave the UK without a passport, however you would find it much more difficult to enter another country without it. As I understand it there is no legal reason to show it on departure, however if you arrived at a foreign airport without it, then the carrier who carried you there would be responsible for returning you to your point of departure, and this is why they put so much effort into checking you have it. Also they need to confirm your identity and a passport is the easiest way of doing this.

Sorry I forgot to mention that you can get visitor's visas for some countries, and these can be used instead of a passport.

Sure. You can go to Ireland without a passport. If you go by air the airlines require photo ID now, but Ryan Air accept a UK photo driving licence, so yes, you can go abroad without a passport.

Last week easyJet told passengers 'show your passports' on my flight from Stansted to Newcastle ! Didn't notice if anyone was brave enough to use some other photo i.d.; perhaps easyJet find that people use a passport anyway. Either that or they think Geordies live in some foreign enclave.
