Unmissable Tourist Attractions

A couple of friends are off to Rome for the weekend - they asked if there was anything on my 'unmissable list' there.

Without hesitation I said "You must go to the Capuchin Monks Crypt - it's the strangest, but most compelling, museum you'll ever visit".

I love Egypt. My absolute favourite is the valley of the artisans. There's a tomb in there that has a painting on the wall which includes among other things a man holding a brace of ducks. The ducks look just like their wings are flapping it's so lifelike.

if you like bones, there's a place like that in Palermo, where lots of the dead are dressed in their Sunday best, to receive visitors for eternity; and another one in Kutna Hora near Prague

Yes the capuchin catacombs. That is on my list of places to visit (!)

I'd count the Pinnacles, in Nambung National Park, within that category. It's an amazing place:

Sigiriya Rock in Sri Lanka. There are some frescoes in a cave part way up which involves climbing up a metal spiral staircase hanging off the side of the rock. Most of the climb is on metal steps hanging off the side of the rock and is flippin scary but it`s worth it when you get to the top.

As far as Rome is concerned, its difficult to make a short-list, as there is so much to see. But the Coliseum and the Forum would be on the list for sure.

Tivoli would also be there, as well as Ostia.

Walk around Trastevere at night and eat out under the stars for a fraction of the cost in more fashionable restaurants in Rome....the street theatre comes free !

the archaeological museum at Leptis Magna used to have a huge portrait of Gadaffi apprently channelling John Travolta

I expect it's been beheaded now, though. His VW Beetle used to be in the Tripoli museum.

Funny you should mention Rome.
We fly out for 5 days in Rome this Sunday.
Only a short flight from Zurich , did consider driving but too far.
We have a few walking tours planned and will use to spot places we want to revisit.
The main advise I have had is too buy tickets in advance and avoid the queues for tickets.

Most excited I have been about visiting a city for many years.
Been wanting to visit Rome for years and years.
Wife wants to drive down to Venice next year (5 hour drive) , but not too bothered myself.

not exactly a city you'd need a car for, Venice. Would it be cheaper/easier/quicker to go by train?
