Are these titles or first lines?

I suppose that anyone who has a copy of the Methodist hymnbook could easily find the answers by looking through the index of first lines. This sounds too easy. Might they be second lines? In any case, being strict C of E I do not possess such a copy.

Well I know a tremendous lot of hymns but you have me puzzled! Are they old or new hymns?

I remember a quiz a couple of years back where the answers were all second lines of Xmas carols. That's what put the idea into my head.

Must tell you this! I was looking down a list of hymns by the famous Methodist songwriters Isaac Watts and/or Charles Wesley and found this very amusing title to an old hymn - bet they don't sing this in church these days - would have everyone in fits of laughing!!! :-))

Just looked in "hymns and psalms" one of the hymn books methodist churches use. No. 349 O Father whose creating hand and no.350 Praise and thanksgiving Father we offer. - both harvest hymns so not often sung.

I've just looker through mum's old 'The Methodist Hymn and Tune Book' (inscription is July 1934 when she bought it and it is a big old volume) and I can't find any which match exactly. A couple are close. Sorry.

The reference I used was Methodist Hymns numbered 1 to 923 - but couldn't see them, or should I have tried Specsavers??

Bowels had a different meaning then. Cromwell said to parliament, " I beseech you in the bowels of Christ..."

Hymns and Psalms was published in 1983 and replaced the methodist hymn and tune book which you have jourdain2 so that's why you were unable to find them.

Are these hymns peculiar to Methodists? They may have been written by Methodists but I am sure they are used by other denominations.

Yes Katwoman praise and thanksgiving is the same tune as morning has broken. Don't think they are particularly methodist hymns but wouldn't really know for certain. Both writers have written other hymns which are in "hymns and psalms"
