Why is Portsmouth such a horrible, dirty, poverty-stricken crime-ridden place?

Very sweeping statement - Portsmouth, like most big towns and cities, has good bits and bad bits. Down in Old Portsmouth, or the more salubrious areas of Southsea (Craneswater Park, for example), it's really rather nice. Gunwharf Quays is modern and posh, but blooming expensive.

Then again, if you hang around the back streets of Somers Town at night, flashing your mobile phone and wallet around, or set up in business as a pediatrician in the somewhat confused community of Paulsgrove, you're asking for trouble.

Next time you go, Andy, have a couple of beers in the sunshine outside the Spice Island pub, watching the harbour traffic go by. Afterwards, get a cab to the Bengal Bay restaurant and enjoy a wonderful curry. Perhaps, you'll leave the city in a better frame of mind!

It is not so bad, I agree with little and old. There are good places and bad places in every town. Maybe your standards might be too high.

my daughter just had her micra broken into. guess what ? she lives in pompy! the scumbags can see it's a g reg micra, and decided to see if she'd left anything of value in the glove box! it's a fri**ing g reg micra, she can't afford expensive leave it in the glove box! had to buy a new bleedin' door for it now, they bent the old one.

as soon as her training courses are finnished she's off.
