Well, gee thanks for your fascinating insight into Munich's culture Norman the Dog.

I am simply interested to know whether any ABers had any recommendations or experiences of the city, or knew of any places/sights worth a visit.

Germany closes down on Sundays (seriously, cities are ghost towns). Therefore do the sightseeing bit walking around on Sunday (but not expecting to go in anywhere other than churches) and the going in on Saturday. Lots of beer cellars, all claiming to be authentic. Essentially drink, eat and be merry, and overlook the fact that wheat beer is the thick end of 1000 calories a pint.

Normanthedog, and why do you think Munich is a dump?

I live in Munich, it's one of the safest, cleanest places in the world with excellent transport system and there's lots to see and do in and around the area. I simply don't want to go back to expensive, dirty & grotty UK.

So, what things interest you? How long are you staying for? Are you flying in? If you're staying for awhile then the Alps, Neuschwanstein, Z�gspitze (highest mountain in Germany) & Berchtesgarten aren't too far away either.

Supermarkets, normal stores are closed on Sunday's but all the bars, beergardens, restaurants etc., are all open still.

Off the top of my head there's: Olympiaturn (have lunch up the rotating Olympia tower restaurant, though it can be pricey), Hofbra�haus (world famous beer hall), English Garden (if it's hot don't be surprised to see nudists, but it's the largest city park in Europe. Has two very large beer gardens there), Schloss Nymphenburg (one of the palaces), the new town hall with Glockenspiel... lots of nice buildings in the centre.

There's also the usual museums, galleries, historical walks (WW2) etc... also look at www.toytownmunich.com

Oh, and most places don't accept credit cards so you'll have to take money out from speedbanks (they don't like to borrow here, but when they do the loans are dirt cheap, under 3%)

Thanks everyone for your helpful answers!

I'm currently living in Germany as part of my degree, and have been travelling to many big towns and cities at weekends to amuse myself and see the country. I'll be taking the train from where I live, and will arrive in Munich on Thursday evening, and leave on Sunday afternoon.

I'm going with a couple of friends and we like seeing all the touristy things, and looking at architecture.

Also, any good places to go out would be appreciated!

Don't believe the statement about credit cards...
I have not been to a restaurant or bigger shop in Munich, that did not accept it!

Bohne, I live in Munich and believe me not many places accept credit cards!!! Now, if you have an EC card you're laughing!

As mentioned by Bohne, the Deutsche Museum is good and well located by the Isar. You probably wouldn't have time for everything and if that's the case I'd give the zoo and Bavaria film studios a miss (studios via tram) but it really depends on what sort of thing you like.

I'd definitely recommend spending a night out in Schwabing - take a walk from Marienplatz, up past Odeonsplatz, University and carry on up Leopoldstrasse. Some very nice buildings and if the walk is too tiring then just take the U3/U6 U-Bahn.

Another good walk is between Rosenheimer Platz & Karlsplatz.

Additionally I'd recommend getting a 3-day partner ticket (3 Tage Partner-Tageskarte) for the inner-ring on the Friday as it's only �20 for the ticket but you can have up to 5 people travel on it and is valid on S & U-Bahns, trams & buses.

The most famous building in Munich, the Frauenkirche is worth a visit and set in a lovely area.

The Asamkirche is a lovely church that is well worth visiting. Very close to the centre, it's simply amazing inside.

Schloss Nymphenburg and park is a definite. Lovely in the summer, especially the gardens.

Residence

The English Garden is lovely and has beergardens Chinese Tower & Seehaus beer garden within the park. The latter is next to a lake where you can take boats out.
