No, you've got the table and object in the wrong jaws.
It looks a bit, sort of, upside down to me. Maybe if you had stuck a piece of veneer on the table, and you wanted to make sure it stuck, this would be one way of doing that. But it still seems a bit odd.

Just joshin':) I imagine that there might be a time when you would want to use it this way; however, I'm sitting here stroking my jaws trying to think of one and nothing comes to mind. Any one care to guess what that object might be?

No one wants to guess this "show and tell"? A clue is that my hobby is clock repair and maintenance.
stuey its a tool of manual labor -I am a blond female -puh-leese! Bet its something to do with cuckoo clocks that grey bit looks vaguely familiar

It's a tool for manipulating the main springs when they are out of the movement so that you can clean and lubricate them safely. http://i60.tinypic.com/2qi7c48.jpg
ah I've seen one of those curly wurly thingies when I took the back off a clock. Does your wife know you are clamping things onto the dining room table ?
Phew!

...I thought it was going to be on your nipples!

Anytime you see a wound up spring, treat it like an unexploded bomb (slight exaggeration). On that particular one, when it's completely wound up into a coil of 2" diameter it contains 96" of 3/8" wide and 1/64" thick steel lurking around itching to get free. Talbot, for that usage I'd have to buy another one:)
