It's very kind of you all to point out other examples but I fear you're missing the point. You, or I anyway, would expect sandpaper to be made of sand. It's cheap and plentiful. I'd guesstimate that a couple of barrow-fulls would make a trillion sheets of the stuff. Why would someone 'scratch around' for an alternative.
