Film Camera

Hi ABers .. not sure where to put this, but have opted for "chatterbank".

My husband is distraught. His beloved compact film camera (made by Ricoh) has conked out for the second time and as it's the same problem as before, and he paid the best part of £150 to get it fixed by the manufacturers, he's now reluctant to send it off to the manufacturers again (in Germany). A bit has come off the back of the camera, and it's one of those bits that just can't be glued back on ... if you get my drift.

Does anyone know of anywhere where he can get a new (or second-hand in good condition) film camera .... must be a film camera, not a digital camera.

I would encourage him to contact the manufacturer and ask them to repair the fault again, for no charge, as the initial repair has failed. No harm in asking, he may be legally entitled to that depending how long ago the camera was repaired.

thanks for the suggestions. HC - what a great idea - I will suggest this to OH and see if he can remember when he had it fixed. I think it was at least a year ago, though. Cheers .... thanks for the help. Chox.

A Yashica T4 is the way to go if you can't find another Ricoh. Top compact.

Chokkie, know how you feel, my hubby is the same regarding film cameras and he says he cannot be doing with all that 'newfangled modern stuff!'
So I am dreading the day his Canon film camera final jacks it in.

With the demise of the film camera for general usage I no longer have that anticipatory feeling of waiting to get the developed prints/slides back from the developer. If I shot a roll of 24 or 36, I was "dying" to know how many good shots I had. I'm not talking about family snap-shots and stuff like that. I mean going out in the woods or around town "creating images". Finally, the phone call that "Your slides are ready.", and down to the drugstore I'd run and look for what "masterpieces" I had made...Great fun.

Loads on ebay, there are categories for 'Vintage Photography' and 'Film Photography'
As said, I buy restore and sell vintage cameras, film only not digital.
What type of camera is he interested in, 35mm , roll film, movie?
If you tell me the model and make of his camera I can give you an idea of cost and availability.
The old camera ( if it is a good make ) is still worth something as 'spares or repair'.

Sharon Canon SLR cameras are going up in price. If you see a decent Canon AE1 or even better an AE1' Program' , grab it , the price is going up and up.

I am a bit puzzled. You say he sent it to the manufacturer in Germany? But Ricoh is Japanese based in Tokyo.
Is the camera a Ricoh 500? It is the only model of 'compact' made by Ricoh that has much of a cult following. I have sold 2 of them but for much less than £150 that he paid for a repair. You will be able to pick up a good '500' for under £30.

I don't know if he is still repairing cameras but I had mine repaired by mike spencer at clay cross and it's never had a problem since, his e-mail used to be camerarepairer @btopenworld .com as I said no idea if he is still repairing cameras but he could be worth a try

You can buy a very good example for £150 to £200, the good news is even broken one goes for £40 or so as spares. So sell the damaged one and get a working one.
