/// When asked which historical period she would most like to live in, Alice Sabatini, from Lazio in Rome, paused for a moment before replying '1942' - one of the bloodiest and darkest years in Italian history under the Mussolini dictatorship. ///

This young woman was asked the question, and she gave her answer, why was it wrong for her to suggest "during WW2"?

Am i correct in saying that the thumb pointing downwards , was for the person to be spared .
As opposed to the way it's interpreted nowadays ?

I believe so.

Common folklore has confused the 'thumbs up' sign which to modern eyes is a positive indication, with the Roman thumbs up from the Emperor, which indicated that the vanquished gladiator was to receive a fatal up-thrust from the sword of the victor.

I'm sure it is, divebuddy, I'll make a point of remembering it if I am ever in that position!

I was just going to say that, assuming I was rich, the Regency period would be absolutely fascinating to visit for a few weeks. (And the dresses were so comfortable and easy to wear!)
Transgenderism isn't sexuality, AOG, although it's a common enough mistake to confuse the two.
I would like to go back to Jane Austen's time and hopefully be woo'd by a Mr Darcy lookalike .......
