A close relative was diagnosed a few weeks ago with bladder cancer. He is having surgery in a few weeks to remove his bladder & prostate. He has had a long talk with the surgeon today & due to other health issues it has been deemed too risky to undergo chemo or radiotherapy as his immune system would be weakened & he would be unlikely to get through these gruelling sessions. He was told today (by the surgeon) that from now till his op in mid October he should eat 2 or 3 Mars bars every day to build up his strength & I have never heard of this before....have you?

I'm presuming his weight is low, if so that would not surprise me.

Don't think it needs to be a specific type of high calorie snack though.
me neither

full fat milk, sugar in tea and coffee, spinach, egg yolks and cheese any where you can put them all work well
I think the key word here is protein. I remember the doctor telling my mother (I was a very sickly child) that she should feed me as much protein as possible. I managed to survive till I was 15, when I started to smoke and drink, and have never looked back since. Not bad for a 66 year old!
No........I I think that something is not quite right with the story.
Preoperative carbohydrate loading leads to improved outcomes after surgery, but this is normally given from 24 hrs before the operation.
I seem to remember being told by my surgeon to have lots of pasta the day before.

I am a urology nurse i care for people who have this op every single day.... Never heard of mars bars.... Build up drinks/ protein yes... Anything i can help with just shout x
Ps we also give preop drinks 6pm night before 10pm and then 6am ... X

Thank you to everyone for your replies. It was the surgeon himself that said about the Mars bars. He's going to consume a lot as his op is not till 14th Oct!
If this is the case, and you have an Aldi near you, I suggest you pop in and buy a good supply of packets of Titan bars. They are basically Mars bars, but a fraction of the price. They come in a 6 pack and are smaller, but just the same. Good luck to your close relative for 14th October!
