I am very unfamiliar with both LOndon and Manchester. But want to know the fastest way to get to Manchester from LOndon. I believe we are staying in the Kensington area of London and would like to go the Salford area of Manchester We would like to go early one morning and return in the evening, is this possible time wise.? I was told it would take about 1 1/2 hrs is this correct?

You can get from London Euston to Salford Crescent in about 2:40, so getting there and back in a day is feasible, but consider an overnight stay in Manchester - just ask on this site for things to do/see/eat/drink.

It is about 200 miles from London to Manchester so I do not see any way you are going to get there in one and a half hours.

As I see it you have three choices, Car, Train, Coach.

If you have a car, or can hire one, you are still talking over 3 hours to drive there, maybe nearer 4 with breaks.

National Coaches run coaches all over UK, but I guess it will take more than 4 hours with all the stops.

Or as Xollob says, train is 2 hours and 40 minutes, but it would be almost impossible to do there and back in a day, or if you could you would only have about 10 minutes in Manchester.

I would plan an overnight stay in Manchester, maybe 2.

Travelling by Megabus http://www.megabus.com/uk/timetables/london_manchester.php?newdate=150506 can give you just over 5 hours in Manchester on a day trip. Travelling by Virgin Train http://www.virgintrains.co.uk/img/timetables/200512/VT7%20London-Manchester.pdf can give you up to 10 hours in Manchester on a midweek day (9 on Saturday, Sunday train travel is a dead loss, you'll be on a bus); neither option is likely to co-incide with the availability of budget tickets.

You could also fly - it's an hour each way, but getting to/from the airport, checking in, etc, is going to add a lot to that.

A day trip by coach train rail or car is perfectly feasible.
