As I see it you have three choices, Car, Train, Coach.
If you have a car, or can hire one, you are still talking over 3 hours to drive there, maybe nearer 4 with breaks.
National Coaches run coaches all over UK, but I guess it will take more than 4 hours with all the stops.
Or as Xollob says, train is 2 hours and 40 minutes, but it would be almost impossible to do there and back in a day, or if you could you would only have about 10 minutes in Manchester.
I would plan an overnight stay in Manchester, maybe 2.
