My 92 year old mum has bought a new table top fridge. Unfortunately she has thrown away the paperwork including the guarantee. Now the fridge is feeling wet, but the frozen compartment is icing up at the same time. We don't understand what is going on. Can anyone offer advice? Thanks in anticipation.

Unless some helpful ABer can tell you what is wrong with the fridge and maybe if it could be rectified easily, have you got any kind of proof of purchase? maybe a credit card receipt or a bank statement showing the payment? the original receipt is not necessary to prove a purchase. Maybe you can remember the approximate time on a particular day that the product was purchased. According to the money saving expert during an interview I heard on the radio a while back, even someone who was with you when you purchased it can be proof of purchase.

If this was a recent purchase contact argos and reject the product as being faulty. MSE uses the phrase 'sad fart' as follows:
Satisfactory quality
As
Described
Fit for purpose
And last a
Reasonable amount of
Time

Quote the sale of goods act 1979. MSE also says that if a product fails within a reasonable time then it is deemed to have been faulty from the start. And you do not need to accept a credit note.

I have returned items to argos and have always found this process easy.

good luck!
Can your Mum provide details of the date she made the purchase
- i.e a cheque or a charge to a credit card?

If she can prove that her fridge is still in the warranty period she
should not necessarily have to have the original paperwork.

If you are not satisfied with the response send a letter addressed
to the Chief Executive.
My post crossed with the one from Alice.

Thank you so much for your prompt replies. Whilst I was waiting for answers I looked on Argos website and from the little video about the fridge, I notice that my mum's doesn't have a door on the freezer bit that is inside the main compartment of the fridge! I think this may explain the problem she has had from the start. My mum gave me the cheque in my name for the fridge and so I will look through my statements to see if I can match up a transaction. Many thanks to both of you for your help.
What does "the fridge is feeling wet" mean? The best way to see if the fridge is actually working properly is to measure the temperature inside it...you should be able to control it at 3 or 4 C. Of course, it won't work properly if it's positioned in an unsuitable place....like above a radiator or near a boiler.

The fridge is wet in the fact that it is making water, so when mum put a little punnet of tomatoes in there, later on, they have condensation droplets on the top of the cellophane. I am now convinced that they have sold this particular fridge without the freezer compartment door. Thanks for your help everyone.
as an aside, nice to see you back, Tenrec.

Still running?
Question Author
Gosh you have a very good memory. Yes, still running, doing ultra marathons now. Did a 50 miler this summer. I'm hoping that running may help with my memory, because it is pretty poor. How are you?
Sorry, got called away.

I'm fine, Tenrec, thank you. Good to hear that you are fit and well. 50 miles is amazing. Good for you.

Have to go again, now. Welcome back. x

Thank you for your help everyone. I have been to Argos, with no receipt, no bank statements, nothing! They were happy to exchange the fridge. Well done Argos.
Good result!
Good for them. Well done, Argos.
They are normally pretty good because they hold the responsibility to you but will simply return it to their supplier.
