Apart from the usual large bowl of pot pourri or a plant, any ideas on what I can put on a table, so it doesn't look so 'empty' (apart from my dinner of course). It is a table in the lounge, not used much but in the centre of the room.

Ever tried re-arranging the furniture so that the table is not the focal point. You could put a nice big bowl of fruit on it, or a narrow cloth down the middle with candlesticks.
How about a silver (or stainless steel) salver with sherry and port decanters and crystal glasses?

Drill some holes in the corners and cover it in green baise, et voila!

Or.. you can get some very nice trendy candle arrangements from most stores. Have a look at store catalogue dining furniture for more ideas, such as...

I like pebbles, Shiny tumbled pebbles. In a plain crystal vase.
Is your room modern looking, or more traditional? For a modern room, a simple wooden platter with glass balls that tone with the room - not christmas tree decorations they are too gaudy! For a more traditional looking room, candlesticks - either lots of different ones (wooden, metal, glass - whatever you can find) or a really smart pair.

Sorry I didn't mention it is a coffee size table, not a dining table, I like the idea of baubles in a bowl, I am trying to modernise the room, cream leather sofas, wood floors, etc. so not too conservative please. :)
There are some very nice 'tealight' holders but keep them in proportion to the table. If you get into the habit of lighting the little tealights they become a feature but not obtrusive and still allow the use of the coffee table.
