Rumanian surnames

Why do Rumanian surnames invariably end in :- ESCU. It must mean something pertinent, maybe "son of " or similar. Can anyone help please?

However, in a recent Middlesbrough v Steaua Bucharest Uefa Cup game the Romanian side was: Carlos ,Ogararu ,Ghionea ,Goian ,Marin ,Oprita (Baciu ,81 ) ,Radoi ,Lovin ,Bostina (Nesu ,86 ) ,Nicolae Dica ,Iacob (Balan ,65 )
Subs not used Cernea,Simion,Cristocea,Cristea.
Apart from Carlos all of the others are Romanian. Has something changed since the demise of the dictator Ceausescu?
