what settings do I go into to ensure I can use whatsapp via wifi when away from home on vodafone smart 4 mini. there is obviously something I am not setting up, but I cannot seem to find it.

You need to logon to the local wi-fi wherever you are (in a shop, cafe, restaurants etc). You don't need to change any WhatsApp settings, just logon to wi fi. If you have not got wi-fi nearby then turn on mobile data.
