Iran is on the Caspian Sea and no where near the Mediterranean.
The missiles fired from the Caspian sea would fly westwards over Iran. Rather than a targetting error, it is more likely a propulsion failure and the missile failed soon after launch.

Russia is attacking Syria's enemies indiscriminately, most of whom are foreign inspired. Be they US sponsored, Saudi sponsored Israeli sponsored or Turkish sponsored, they are all attacking Russia's ally, so are legitimate targets in the eyes of Russia.

Spot on, and the fact that they are foreign supported is of course an added incentive for Putin.
Putin it has been noted is a big fan of state power. He sees threats to Assad as threats to state power and of course his own state power by extension
It's amusing to hear both Iran and Russia deny the reports of the misguided cruise missiles. They will be claiming black is white next

As I have said above, it is unlikely the missiles were misguided. They had to fly over Iran to reach their target, so the failure is likely to be either a propulsion or fuel problem, or a problem with the low fly, terrain hugging technology. The Iranians and Russians pm be denying any dud fires, but the US reports of them firing from the Mediterranean are also certainly wrong.
