Which freezer for an outhouse?
6 Answers
I used to keep a fridge freezer in the outhouse but it continually defrosted itself in the winter. Is there a specific type I need to look for please? I am looking to have a small chest freezer this time. Thanks.

What might work would be within the outhouse, make an insulated area to put the freezer fridge in and use the heat generated to keep the area warm. If this doesn't work then you'll need to run a space heater to keep the outhouse warm enough to run the fridge freezer. I have a chest freezer in my garage and even in the extreme cold last year it didn't play up...maybe a freezer on its own might be a better bet?
As an aside... your question prompted a real double-take... an outhouse here in the U.S. is the common name for an old fashioned privy... an outdoor bathroom... usually a "two holer" with a half moon cut in the door... like this:

A stand alone freezer should be OK in an outhouse because it has its own compressor and thermostat. A fridge freezer shares both these components between the fridge and the freezer, The thermostat is in the fridge, when the room it is in gets cooler than you want the inside of the fridge the compressor doesn't run at all so the freezer gradually warms up to the temperature of the room or outhouse. If you have a prolonged cool spell the freezer will defrost.
