Why has my cat bitten his claws so much they have bled a little?

My cat has made his back claws bleed a little by biting them off - why would he go so far? I know that they do bite them but not that much!

I have my shiny new computer minus a modem. I want to get broadband fairly soon - I'm sure the techie in the shop said i wouldn't need to buy a modem that it would be part of the deal when I signed up...
