Overheating and crashing

Any advice on why my P C overheats 40c & crashes when I am using an interactive C D ( Excel Tutor) yet when I use MSOffice 2000 on my hard drive the temp remains stable @ 26/32C and does not crash....

Is it possible to open in Publisher 2000 a file created in Publisher 98,  I click on the file and it says unable to open a file created in a previous edition.
