crispels

my mother (she was Italian) used to make something called crispel(not sure of the spelling) they were a kind of savory donut which we had with salt usually at Christmas - she cooked them in olive oil...

does anyone know why 7 of the 21 bandsmens serving in HM Navy on the HMS Renown in 1861 came from Palermo-Sicily?

of a crew of 891 = 21 were Bandsmen - 7 came from Italy - 6 of them from Palermo=-Sicily - does anyone know why?
