Rover 25 1.4 thermostat

the water in the car seem to dissapear and in the tank it i left with alot of sludge. alot of steam comes out of the tank after 5 mins of driving. i think that the thermostat seems to be the problm...

When i rev the engine it chucks out cloud of black smoke the ground is coverd with black saut ,i would like to hear from any body who has had this sort of problem if so how was it sorted
