Identifying a moth

I have just found a very large moth in the garden and I would like to search on this site to identify it http://ukmoths.org.uk/ but I'd like to narrow it down a bit first. The moth doesn't look well...

Wasp?

I saw something that looked like a wasp today. It was flying about where an old bees nest was. It was about an inch long, black and kind of ant/wasp like and with a dark orange band around its tail....
