vauxhall astra 1.6i auto 1993

when driving at a steady speed of say 50mph the revs suddenly jump from say 2000rpm to 4500rpm and then drop to 3000 and then back up and down for some time.any ideas why.

sometimes when driving at a steady speed the revs suddenly become erratic jumping from say 2000rpm to 4500rpm and then drop then suddenly go up again. any idea what is wrong?
