I would be interested to know why you are carrying out a poll on the above,as I am one of the VERY FEW that use it?Will you next have a poll on whether or not to give the answers to crossword puzzles,in which the winner could win £1-2,000?,Or maybe even vote on whether or not ABers should be allowed to download recipes from the site? The list is endless.

I have just spoken to the Daily Mail & they have assured me that the T & C's are NOT violated by the asking for, or the provision of, a number.

As long as ONE paper is purchased, that ONE number can be used by anybody, with the purchaser's permission.

Duncer - ...but why should we provide numbers to people who don't buy the paper, or seem not to?

There's...

Thank you ABerrant. So this is the one that really matters

11.1. A User must purchase a copy of the Publication to be eligible to register a Unique Number

That should resolve any doubt.
"Surely contacting the publication to clarify the situation is a sensible move - given that earlier the word 'Fraud' was bandied around."

mamyalynne - 'Fraud' wasn't bandied around; it was a direct quote from the Rewards Club T&Cs for which a link was provided.
Yes a poor choice of words on my part.

However the Response from the Mail tells us that the practice of sharing these numbers is allowed, as long as the issue is bought.
The unsubstantiated response...
What are you implying??
I'm implying "where's the proof" of that response.

I have no proof that when I contacted the Rewards Club back in June that I was told purchase was necessary, so without a definitive reply by DM to the editorial staff it comes down to "he said, she said".
A purchase has been made though.

How would you like it substantiated, I will see what I can do.

ABerrant: > when I contacted the Rewards Club back in June that I was told purchase was necessary

I see no contradiction here. What's the problem?
From the T&Cs:

A User must purchase a copy of the Publication to be eligible to register a Unique Number

is not the same as

A User may borrow a copy or obtain a Unique Number from a previously purchased Publication.

How DM choose to enforce their unambiguous condition is clearly the sticking point here. It is not down to you to substantiate anything. It is purely an editorial issue that should never have been put to a poll.
Good grief...
> A User may borrow a copy or obtain a Unique Number from a previously purchased Publication.

But it's not borrowed. It's given. A unique number can only be used once. Why can't the purchaser decide what to do with it once they've purchased it?

What you're asking for is akin to asking people not to leave their finished-with newspapers on a train seat for somebody else to read (or, in this case, to obtain the unique number from). It may be highly principled, but it's also completely OTT and unenforceable. In fact, there's an argument that such second-hand papers can introduce new readers to the publication, who then go on to buy copies themselves in future. This may be why the DM is quite relaxed about the whole thing ...
"This may be why the DM is quite relaxed about the whole thing"

We don't know that they are. They weren't when I asked.

A purchaser may do what they like but a Rewards Club Member has rules to follow.

A User (aka Rewards Club Member) *must* purchase...

That seems very simple English to me.
They'd have to be quite relaxed. They can't stop one friend giving the whole paper to another friend. And that's all that's taking place in this instance, but virtually rather than physically.

If the DM really had a problem they could see the numbers that were published here, see the Rewards Club Members that used those numbers, and take action directly from there ...
If only ABEd would make an arbitrary decision to which all AB users would have to defer (if they follow the rules) this will never be resolved.
ABerrant - Precisely. The Ab Editor has the result of his poll; all he needs to do is make a decision based on the democratic vote.
Morning,

I will make a decision with the poll information in due course.

All the best,

Ed

It does not say you have to purchase the copy of the publication in which the particular unique number appears before using that same unque number. If I had bought a Mail months ago, I have bought a copy of the publication, so what's to stop me using a number from someone else's paper to-day?
TCL - so you are a No vote then. OK. Do you think this is ok too?

I'm not bothered, I am pointing out that the Terms & Conditions are worded in such a way as to allow me or anyone to be given a number without having to buy a paper. If the Daily Mail can't get the wording of that particular condition correct, whose fault is that?
Hi guys, while we're all gathered here, anyone got a spare number for today?
